Supplements and sport training – making the connection for increased performance

The synergy between training system and supportive supplements has proven to enhance and accelerate the average person that practices fitness into the league of athlete and sports. With an appropriate sport coach, they will identify what system is trained in cardiovascular and muscular recruitment for the activity or sport you have chosen. A sport coach will create a suitable plan adapted to your body type, weight and age along with the supportive nutrition and supplements. Over the years watching personal trainers try to utilize core strength exercises, and balance ball routines for their clients has been admirable in effort yet falls short of what a sports coach may know thru experience and practical application thru sport. Cycling workouts, peaking performance and avoiding plateaus are only a few of the many attributes a sports coach brings to the overall performance plan.

Performance is greatly enhanced when a specific plan is created; charting goals that go beyond a weight lifted, body weight loss, or a measurement on the body. This is what separates the personal trainer from the PSC (performance and sport coach).I look at the overall performance of an athlete’s M.O.V.E, an acronym I created to remember movement, output, velocity, endurance. Let’s look at each of these attributes and the specific supplements I use to enhance them.

Movement is the most important of all the four attributes of performance. If the practice of the form is off then the rest become moot. The form of the body must be aligned to maximize the skill set being patterned in the brain. For example, I watch an aspiring athlete self-teach himself vertical jumps. His form on first observation looks good. He seems to have a nice vertical. Yet if we come back to him in 3 months he will not have improved or made negligible gains. When we inspect closer we see his landing is static, and does not continue the mechanics of the vertical. The brain learns to shut off instead of continuing the motion. Applied in sports, that moment’s hesitation will cost a rebound in basketball, a return on a hard serve in tennis. Specific plyometric movements must be introduced to the athlete progressively. Single simple movements become the foundation for greater compound movements. The resultant ability is to perform complex motor skills in a greater environment of performance. The success comes in building the blocks in a proper order so the movement is clean. As we load the athlete with more output, which will be discussed next, the movement stays true to form.

The following supplements and vitamins introduced to my athletes have given to raised skill sets that are usually learned after only years of training. Their brain function, memory and mental acuity show dramatic results. We compare their performance pre and post just after 3 months to find these results. The following are found threw out the products I use:

Output is a collection of measurements that we gain from a group of quantifiable general motor skills of being an athlete no matter the sport, and specific output measurements particular to the sport. I looked at my own performance as a fighter and martial artist, not an athlete. The results I gleaned from my training in retrospect compared to when I became a certified coach and a professional athlete is amazing. In the weight lifting world squats, bench press and dead lift are used to measure strength. In the cross fit world number of repetitions in a certain amount of times is used. Exercises as jumping squat boxes, skipping, pull ups and rows are just some of the examples. If we needed to compare cross fit would be the closest in training perspective, yet again is different because at one point form breaks down but the exercise is continued. In my coaching performance, movement must be held at a premium, and as that is lost, so should be the last repetition. Output will improve as form and movement improve. The more output, the more muscle memory to mental connection made, results in greater performance. Output includes length of distance, lateral, linear and vertical of a single movement that utilizes core stabilizing muscles, and output of the same factors in a compound movement based on the core action required in the specific sport. It may contain a weight load, or just the body’s weight. As the motion must not be negatively affected, progressive load of any extraneous weight must be done slowly. An example of output would be beginning a back arch with 40lbs resistance. The basic form is hips rock in once, hips arch on a one-two step, dynamic arch is created, and repeat 10 times. The description of the back arch is the movement, the repetitions are the endurance, the time it takes to a single or compound motion is the velocity. The output is the depth of the arch, the stretch of the calves achieved at the maximum peak of the movement. The following supplements have shown to effectively enhance muscle size, strength and power.

The next in the M.O.V.E training system of coaching is Velocity. This term translates to power, and speed under stress. Velocity combines movement with output with a measurable increase of speed. The ability to keep form, and essentially continue the depth and value of the form thru output now moves into a highly risky area if not coached properly. The faster something moves the more impact it makes on the body. It also increases the success in most sports other than perhaps curling. Velocity increases physical pressure that challenges the athlete to stabilize muscles, keep the brain calm, and the body balanced. Ligaments, tendons and bones are impacted due to the torque and gravity. A great attribute of functionality begins to affect the athlete directly as their velocity increases so does their competitive edge versus other athletes. As the athlete increases performance, more confident with form, increased depth within the form, the body will naturally move quicker. It actually takes less strength and more endurance, when performed quickly. Velocity is a great way to measure performance because it is easily seen with the naked eye and the athlete themselves can feel the pounds per square inch power they begin to generate at the beginning and end of the movement. I look at the beginning and ending, as the points of velocity. The movement in between remains the function of output. The following supplements have been used to create quicker recovery, more initial bursts of power and high energy. You will also note that supplements begin to overlap.

In most training regimens, this is the first attribute that is considered important. I disagree strongly. My experience shows me amateur athletes without a training team of coaches, a schedule set with rest and recuperation periods, are delayed in potential performance in their given sport. Their personal cardiovascular system increases, but their particular core value simple movements to not progress, and as soon as output contains too many compound movements their form crumbles. This is in direct resistance to the popular thinking, where endurance becomes everything, and skill becomes secondary. Let me give you an example of endurance over performance. A mixed martial artist with extreme cardio vascular ability, with phenomenal resting heart rate recovery competes against a much higher skilled opponent. The opponent has M.O.V, but lacks in E (endurance). We have three possible outcomes. The first is although the MMA athlete has less endurance his M.O.V is so high that he spends less energy, as his overall athleticism allows for economy of motion, energy with maximum results, he wins over endurance as the others endurance is cancelled out. The second outcome is the M.O.V allows him to match the better Endurance of the opponent, and they draw. The third outcome, and it has become common in combat sports, is the opponent without the M.O.V but with E alone evades, counter fights until he can bring the other athlete into an area where the M.O.V has suffered because there is no more endurance to support the repetition of it.That there is the key to Endurance, is the repetition of movement, output and velocity without degradation of any measurement.Recovery, health, and a strong immune system aid in the heart, lungs, circulation and oxygenation that the body needs to keep going. Gross motor skills will surface when the endurance of an athlete fails. Complex motor skills begin to crumble, and as the heart rate raises the fine motor skills disappear. Endurance must be cultivated intelligently and with a lot of supplement support for quicker results. The endurance movements must be whole body, or core body that relates to the sport. Jumping jacks and old school sit-up’s are not the exercise tools needed to build sport endurance. Ironically most athletes at the lower level and most definitely common gym clients still popularize their use. The following supplements create an environment of health and wellbeing. They help function of the body, digesting, immunizing and keeping the body more alkaline than acidic. These all lend to more readily acquired performance in endurance.

Royal Jelly

Cranberry Extract

Astragalus Extract

Milk Thistle Extract

Siberian Ginseng

Ginkgo Biloba Extract

Cinnamon Bark Extract

Hawthorn Berry Extract

Dandelion Extract

Black Pepper Extract

Protease

Fructooligosaccharides

Probiotic Blend

Papaya

Amylase

Lipase

Cellulase

Glutamine

Glycine

Branch chain amino acids

High Grade vitamin and mineral supplement including or adding:

2000 IU vitamin D

2000 IU vitamin C

Fish oils:

EPA 800-1000 mg

DHA 400 mg

In summary, when looking at M.O.V.E as a whole it becomes dependent on each other for maximum performance. One does not work well without the other. The order of coaching is important, as form, function of form, ability to perform, and finally the repetition of the form is matched to movement, output, velocity and endurance. The focus must begin in that order to be effective, and the synergistic use of supplements, vitamins and minerals to increase performance of each. When looking to increase performance, ensure that the athlete understands their physical core, the stabilizing structure of the body and main function of their sport. The rest is getting them to M.O.V.E!

State of Readiness

Colour Code

Colour Code refers not to a condition of peril, but rather to a condition of readiness to protect one’s own life by all means possible: Fortunately most people are very reluctant to take lethal action against another human being thru moral reluctance and lack of combative progressive operant conditioning.

Most people are reluctant to press the trigger

Use a weapon

Our own body as a weapon on another human body

This calls for a wrenching effort of will which is always difficult

Inflicting counter measures of deadly force and serious bodily harm as a reaction is difficult to achieve and sometimes apparently impossible for most. Training without proper conditioning of mind set, stress survival reaction and progressive gross motor skill training make it near impossible also. Using the colour code system originated by Lt.Col Cooper for decision making under fire with a firearm and the ability to shoot another human being in combat has revolutionized our ability to train civilians and non-combatants into defending themselves. It never is a question of technique, or martial arts/combat skills that creates a better outcome; it is a question of speed of choices made under pressure and the preparation before coming into harm’s way that decides the outcome.

Condition White

Typical of most, the attitude is “them” not “me”. Violence happens to those they read about, see in the news and hear about from friends. How many have looked at me when I am speaking at a conference with that look of well I never put myself in that situation. It is that very attitude of not being able to even conceive that there is always a mathematical percentage that will allow violence or happenstance to come to the unsuspecting that brings it.Thru proactive thinking and routines, not paranoia and fear we will avoid most dangers and violence.

Most live our days in Condition White

Unaware we are quite frequently in deadly danger and do not realize it or choose to ignore it.

If you are attacked in Condition White, you will probably suffer dire consequences

The Power Within

The Messengers of Intuition: Prevention and Prediction

Anytime one crosses the road, there is a chance to be struck by a vehicle. Anytime one drives in a vehicle, a lane change may become deadly. Condition white makes us forget this reality. Preventive and defensive driving makes the chances of it happening almost zero. How many times have we said to ourselves, I knew this would happen, I could tell that was going to happen…My gut told me something was wrong, I should have listened.as soon as I saw him I knew? These are the common sayings of all of us. Why do we shut off the one voice we can trust?

After studying and speaking to hundreds of victims of violence, I hear these awful words, “I didn’t want to be rude”. “I didn’t want anyone to think I was paranoid. “It was daytime. “Listen if there is one constant, one prediction tool that can save you, can make you so much better protected, it’s that inner voice. It’s the feeling that your stomach squeezes you with. Your physiology works in the back ground. The Para sympathetic nervous system (low arousal state), and sympathetic nervous system (high arousal state) works in such a way that consciously and unconsciously your body prepares you to defend, to escape, to question to observe. Your heart rate, your adrenaline the very sweat glands all work to tell you messages of warning.

nagging feelings, persistent thoughts

wonder, curiosity

anxiety, apprehension, fear

hunches, gut feelings

doubt, hesitation, suspicion

Condition Yellow

Simply put- aware and thoughtful routines. Understanding that proper routines and safety conscious living, aids in preventing and predicting violence. Never taking for granted the safety and security of oneself, family or friends. I urge you to not live in fear, I simply urge you to look both ways before crossing the street. Don’t wear earphones when jogging. Let a friend know when you meet someone new. Avoid road rage and street arguments with strangers. Don’t assume the person you have conflict with has the same moral reluctance as you. Weapons and weapons of opportunity can happen in a blink of an eye. Don’t blink…

A condition in which we are aware that the world is full of hazards which may be prevented by our own daily defensive and safety habits.

An awareness that you individually may have to take decisive action

“Today may be the day” Understanding no matter the precaution, the prevention and our ability to predict, anything can happen. So never say never.

If attacked in Condition Yellow, you will probably win, assuming that you can say

“On this day I would not hesitate to defend myself. I would immediately escape, and help others to escape

Willingness to take a very unusual action

You are awake and aware

Condition Orange

Assess and Plan

The change that comes in this colour code, is the general preparation to act, to plan in yellow becomes specific to the situational factors at hand. In Orange you have mentally focused and recognized probable harm, danger and hazard to a specific source and person. This is where understanding Kinesetics (unspoken body language), and proxemics (distance from person(s), reactionary gap needs to be evaluated. In this stage we have assessed the danger, we have created a plan to escape, or meet the threat with an appropriate intervention option of force.

I must defend myself against him/her-specifically (Assess)

‘Today is the day”

Create an action trigger in reference to him/her-specifically (Plan)

If they make a fist I will do this action…If they reach into their pocket when I ask them to stop I will do this…

I must escape and help others escape him/her-specifically (Plan)

Use of force and intervention options are pre chosen (Plan)

Your attitude is dictated by the subject behaviour of the perceived danger and the tactical considerations that you have at hand

Condition Red

Act

This is Condition Red, and in Red you have solved the psychological problem and have no further concerns .You have solved the moral dilemma. Beyond the specific choice of reaction, level of force used, it was already decided well before it was used. It is done, you have survived, and you have planned, prepared for this moment. You are alive.

Summary of Conditions

White you will lose –No assessment, which means no plan, no time to act

Yellow you will have proactive routines, prevention, prediction-A continuous assessment of the world we live in.Wakeful and aware. Living and working with routines that create an ability to predict violence, and prevent it with a high percentage of success. Allows initiative response to violence

Orange you will have a specific plan- provided you are alert and aware, totally prepared with “action response”. No hesitation, ready to use your action trigger if mentally pulled. Heart rate and breathing have been evaluated and you are consciously bringing them under control to maximize gross motor skills under stress survival conditions.

Red you will win, you will survive- Red you have already made the appropriate decision and have stopped the specific situational factor that had created the violence and threat to one’s person.

Not to be left behind, I grudgingly left MSN and hotmail as the end all of online communications and embarked on the now common Facebook. From Facebook, I learned LinkedIn and Twitter. Each method has its own value of expression on the web. They all hold a constant, communicate openly and honestly for the best results. It has been key to my success, as i have shared my life, my family and my martial arts expression with the world wide web. In addition to the open dialogue an exchange of information has been the incredible friendships made, and the sharing of innovative ideals and methodology. I have been able to transform myself and adapt to all the growth that constantly pushes combat and martial arts each year. Training via Skype, and other live web cam systems has kept me in touch with my own far flung instructors around the world. You tube has been a boon, as I share at no cost my innovations and expressions of Goshin Ryu Seif JuJutsu and in return learn and experience other arts via their submissions. The day of secrets are over. All systems are open and are being spread throughout the world.

The biggest step in utilizing the W.W.W was to approach my website as a connection of all my online presences. A one stop shop where anyone could communicate with me directly via several different mediums. Working with top notch professionals Bonsai project director and their friends, SceneStealer.

It came to me very young and has followed me throughout my life. Honour your name, honour your family, honour your actions and deeds, and honour your word. Honour is what defines me. It is the roof that gives me shelter, and the house that secures me.

It is without question one of the strongest ideals that pervade the entire training body. They all without question must honour each other and treat each other as brothers and sisters. It is not a simple gym, pay your dues learn some techniques and go home. It is a place where one learns to become a true modern day warrior. To achieve beyond the mats, and reach out into success of our everyday lives.

Personally speaking the ideals of being a warrior outweighs the benefits of being a fighter. A warrior is for himself and his people, a fighter is for himself. He will last for as long as he can fight, and then fall into the clutter of other fallen fighters. The warrior remains a steadfast fixture for himself, and his family and friends. He fights, but it is just a small facet of the overall picture.

We have four pillars that weave through our training, our lives our daily routines as warriors. Loyalty, Integrity, courage and quest for knowledge. With these pillars holding our house of honour we strive to perfect ourselves mentally and physically through the hardship and character testing training that we practice.

Without these pillars, we would be no different than any other training gym, and be no different than the many that train in the martial arts. We are different, for this is The Way. The way of strategy, the way of living, the way of the warrior.

My personal path has been one of great drama, great change and great learning. Every few years I embrace a new system of martial arts or combat system analyze it, perfect it, absorb it and move on. This journey has continued since the very first dojo I walked into as a 6 year old at the local YMCA judo club to my latest embrace of modern day tactical weapons. It’s something I find that has given me completeness in my ongoing expression of the martial sciences. Battle, war, combat, violence. Every facet of these subjects learned through the perspective of different cultures, and nationalities. Embracing them fully, not in part has given me an advantage in the expression and teaching of these arts. It is not a bit of something I bring to the student and myself, but the whole of a thing I bring. I take the perspective of a complete art and use it to enhance the system I now teach called Goshin Ryu Seif JuJutsu.

The ongoing threat of stagnation and sport always find their way into martial arts, combative systems and in general any program that teaches to the masses. The nucleus of my program is the martial integrity in concepts applied to avoid stagnation and sport mentality. It is to survive violence, by prevention and prediction (phycology training). The physical portion is a combative reaction that is in proportion to the attack or danger. My ability to draw on different combative systems and martial arts has been a personal boon for me. My knowledge base is quite varied for all ranges of combat, physical and psychological.

Having had the opportunity to compete in sanctioned and real life encounters many times over the last two decades, along with working security for almost just as long gives me the real time application of what I teach, and the do’s and don’ts of combat. Multiple opponents, weapons, confined spaces, harsh environment. Even the preparation needed to compete in the ring and cage aid in the psychology of combative mind set which I also draw upon. It is no small matter to have found application and function from true combat, and or to learn from those that have lived it themselves. It brings so much liveliness to what is being learned and confidence that it will work when the time comes.

I have gone through phases, which means my student body has gone through phases. Our hand guard has changed over the years, as has our striking. As I learned more effective methods through experimentation, personal experience and shared experiences of those I trained under I would not hesitate to adapt those changes to our syllabus. I have had great success at teaching people quickly and efficiently as I learn to simplify things, and draw from the varied experiences of those I teach. It has been a great sharing and learning curve.

It is what brought me to this point now. I felt it was time to expand and expound on GOSHIN RYU SEIF JUJUTSU. It is different from others I believe because of how we integrate entire systems to flow within each other effortlessly. The nucleus is how to use intervention options to end or deal with the situational factors by three results-KNOCKOUT, KNOCKDOWN; SUBMISSION (CONTROL).The methodology of how we gain these results is the outermost part of our nucleus which makes GOSHIN RYU SEIF JUJUTSU work. We survive the situation initially, we escape knockout, knockdown, submission (control), we reverse the situation in our favour, and we then dominate by positional control and then finish with KNOCKOUT, KNOCKDOWN, and SUBMISSION (CONTROL).

This is what makes our journey so fulfilling. We never rest on laurels, or past achievements. We never simply accept what we currently do is the best. We continue to strive to perfect the age old answer of which system is the best - Answer: the one that works best for you

Teaching Law Enforcement and Security almost two decades has given me a personal experience of what the law allows and what it prohibits. It has given me the perspective of the subject, jury, judge and our society. The benefit of this perspective guides a martial arts programs success in court. How many combat sport clubs that teach boxing, muaythai kickboxing, MMA, grappling expound on their program’s self defense ability. There is a big gap between self defenses, combat, combat sport and use of force. I would like to define each, so that we may look at the outcome of each perspective.

Combat Fighting

Combat Fighting is generally characterized by assaults between two or more people with or without weapons. Combat is the aggressive stance of taking out the other person until they cannot fight back anymore by any means necessary. Maiming, killing and collateral damage may be involved. Termination, taking of prisoners, confinement, torture, these are all part of combat. Military and special operation units at different times are called upon to execute combat at its most violent level. Street combat is not ordered or justified by the authority but rather is expressed emotionally at the time. It is chaos, and erupts most times suddenly. Those trained in pure combat will use whatever force they feel like using, and force that can maim, disfigure or kill. It derives from what they have been taught, or what they have not been taught but do instinctively. Essentially combat in its purest form attempts to destroy the opposition with whatever means possible with extreme prejudice. The likely outcome is death, or severe damage and injury.

Self Defense

Self Defense is written in the law in most first world countries. In Canada it is written in section 34 of the Canadian criminal code of Canada. 34. (1) Everyone who is unlawfully assaulted without having provoked the assault is justified in repelling force by force if the force he uses is not intended to cause death or grievous bodily harm and is no more than is necessary to enable him to defend himself. That means if you cause serious bodily harm, or serious bodily harm that causes death, with the intent of lawfully defending an unprovoked attack and you could not use any other method to stop the attack or suffer serious bodily harm or death yourself, this is acceptable. The responsibility will lay on you to prove you meant to repel the force to stop the attack, and that you defended yourself with two strategies in mind. DE escalates and disengages. It is not combat, nor street combat, it is self defense. You have been taught to take out your opponent or opponents with or without weapons until the attack stops, and you may disengage from the attack/attackers. Self Defense essentially comes from being provoked first, or becoming pulled into the proxemics of sensing serious bodily harm may occur if preemptive, or preventative force is not used. The likely outcome is never known, but always with the intent that less force used is better. This method prevents excessive injury, accidental maiming and death when at all possible.

Sport Combat

Sport Combat is characterized by rules of engagement. No matter the type of combat sport, it always has rules that two opponents will agree to. There is a referee with the combatants at all time, and judges watching from the outside. Fouls and unsportsmanlike conduct is frowned upon and not common. If it is a weapon sport, the weapons are standardized, and full protection is worn on the body as well as the weapon itself. The differences between opponents are marginal. Weight, height; age and experience are generally as close as possible to create a fair fight. All areas that would cause permanent damage or death are restricted. Essentially the combat sport method of winning is knockdown, knockout or submission whereby the opponent verbally or physically shows he has given up. The sport achieves a high rate of success at both sport combatants sustaining only minor injuries. Few recorded deaths have ever occurred during these types of competitions, as the intent is to win not permanently injure, maim or kill the opponent.

Use of force is written in the law books of most 1st world countries. In Canada it is in section 25 of the Canadian criminal code of Canada. Everyone who is required or authorized by law to do anything in the administration or enforcement of the law

(a) As a private person,
(b) As a peace officer or public officer,
(c) In aid of a peace officer or public officer, or

(d) By virtue of his office,
Is, if he acts on reasonable grounds, justified in doing what he is required or authorized to do and in using as much force as is necessary for that purpose.

(2) Where a person is required or authorized by law to execute a process or to carry out a sentence, that person or any person who assists him is, if that person acts in good faith, justified in executing the process or in carrying out the sentence notwithstanding that the process or sentence is defective or that it was issued or imposed without jurisdiction or in excess of jurisdiction.

In a nut shell I will condense this to mean if you see a serious crime about to be committed, are being committed, or just have been committed. A crime that would be indictable offense, a crime that would see a fine of over 10,000 dollars, or more than two years in jail, or be seen before a jury you may use force to stop, restrain and arrest that person until a higher authority or on the request of that authority takes over. It means that physical interaction, and use of any force is to stop, restrain or arrest person, or persons. The intent is never to injure, maim, or kill.

As I have laid out the basic definitions we have a modern era of teaching Martial Arts that cross all these lines, but are not defined clearly by one or the other. I believe that current trends in Combat sports are advertising themselves as self-defence and combat/streetcombat. The techniques themselves might adapt themselves to any of the definitions, but it is the method of training them without the proper stress survival reaction scenario drilling. The education of the physiological changes that take over our bodies, threat cues, kinesics and proxemics awareness. Without this as part of the training syllabus, methodology even the greatest of champions may find themselves victims of violence outside the safety of the ring and cage.

In our school we have the constant methodology, and awareness of what defines what we are doing and why we are doing it.We train under *SSR simulation and gross motor skill response to achieve success over the situation itself not the opponent or opponents most train for. We train to articulate the why, what, where, when, how and why of any physical altercation. Even in the sport side of training articulating and analyzing makes for a better training method. When one studies the desired outcome of any situation, it creates a better training plan to achieve it.It will not be the singular technique but, the overall approach that creates the right reaction. The conclusion I have drawn is no matter how competent the person and their techniques, if it hasn’t been tested under the conditions of one of these definitions effectively and scientifically under progressive stress testing they will revert to their conditioned pattern. All the training in the world will not matter if it doesn’t suit the situation or the desired outcome.
